Living in Manchester for just over ten years means I’ve seen my fair share of Burger restaurants pop up. Gone are the days when you had to pop in to your local burger king or a burger van to get yourself a ‘decent’ burger as these days more bespoke burger restaurants are springing up – which is good but not if you’re coeliac or need to stick to a gluten free diet.
If I’m honest, I’ve avoided burger places. Mostly due to the fact that some restaurants offer a gluten free alternative by not giving you the bread bun. Which is fine but I’m the kind of girl that does not want to eat my burger with a knife and fork!
So you can imagine my surprise when we stumbled across Handmade Burger Co‘ who not only offered 40 gluten free burgers, are accredited by Coeliac UK but actually offer gluten free buns!
Handmade Burger Co is situated in Deansgate, Manchester in the Old Courthouse, which is perfect location if you fancy getting a bite to eat before a night out or to unwind after a day of shopping. At Handmade Burger Co’ there is no table service, instead you place your order at the till which is next to the kitchen where you can see the chefs hard at work. This is because all burgers are made freshly on the day!
All the staff here are super friendly and when I informed them that I was coeliac, they gave me their huge ‘gluten free menu‘. Usually, a special ‘gluten free’ menu lists a fair few items that are safe for coeliacs, however at Handmade Burger Co I was taken aback at how huge the menu was that it took me a while to decide what I actually wanted to order.
In the end I chose the Beef Cheese classic which was a 100% prime scotch beef patty with mature cheddar, their original Handmade Burger Co’ burger relish, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, red onion with a gluten free bun. As all their gluten free buns are individually packaged, I did not have to worry about cross contamination.
Although I did not mind assembling my own burger, I can imagine some people would. For me, it was a tiny inconvenience and completely forgotten once I bit into the burger. The bread did not taste like ‘gluten free’ bread as usually, when I’ve something gluten free that is pre packaged, it has tasted quite stale – but not with this! Everything including their home made burger relish was amazing!
Also, due to being a massive greedy guts that day, I had ordered myself a side of sweet potato fries which are, hands down, the best sweet potato fries I’ve had. I love sweet potato fries but whenever I’ve ordered them in other places I’ve been told they aren’t gluten free due to the ‘flour’ coated on them to give them a slight crisp. So to my fellow coeliac-sweet-potato-fries fanatics, Handmade Burger Co’ sweet potato fries are gluten free!
This is why I have awarded Handmade Burger Co – 4.5/5
